RN & RM Basketball Association

The Royal Navy Basketball Association (RNMBA) has been in existence since 1964, and has competed in the Inter Service Championships ever since. Initially represented at Senior level, we introduced a side at Under 23 level in the mid 1980s to develop younger talent and feed the senior squad and this has worked extremely well ever since. A Ladies squad was also formed in the early 1990s.

All three sides now represent at Inter Service Championships, which always takes place at an appropriate Service unit over the first weekend in March each year. Although the smallest of the three Services, the RNMBA has competed to good effect at Inter Service, punching well above its weight, and now consistently supplies a number of players to the Combined Service squad that plays in a truly international tournament at SHAPE in Belgium in late November, early December each year.

Although Inter Service competition is one the main aims each year, a priority is to link with local communities, schools, colleges and universities up and down in order to make that vital link between sport and professionalism in the modern Royal Navy. Reflecting the global appeal of the game, our squads have players from all over the United Kingdom, Asia, Caribbean and the USA.

The squads get together for about 6 Fixtures and Training weekends each calendar year and also try to get away for a week’s Training Camp, preferably to a European destination. Tours have also featured as part of the make up in recent year’s, the most notable being Canada 2002.

The RN&RMBA has competed in the Inter- Service Championships since its inception in 1964. There are 3 squads: seniors, ladies and U23 – all of which compete at the annual Inter-Service Championships over the first weekend in March. Although the Inter Service competition is one the Association’s main priorities, it is also important to get involved with local communities, schools, colleges and universities in order to make the link between sport and professionalism in the modern RN.
