Angling Outing For Royal Navy

Five novice Royal Navy anglers took advantage of a recent beginners sporting event, when they travelled to Loch Etive at Taynuilt for some deep sea fishing.

Led by Petty Officer Mal Malcolm, the group started early, taking to the water on a fantastic spring day and wasting no time in hanging a mashed up fish stew over the side of the boat to attract the fishes.

Leading Regulator Fletch Fletcher was the first angler to tighten into some Bib and Pouting, setting the standard for the rest of the day’s fishing.  It was not long before Chief Petty Officer Brian Emmers from HMS Illustrious followed, catching the first shark of the day – a young spur dog.

But it was HM Naval Base Clyde’s Leading Airman Photographer Andy Laidlaw who stole the show, catching the biggest fish of the day – a 5lb Spur Dog.

The fishing gear for the trip was supplied by Glasgow Angling, while the boats were from the Loch Etive fishery manager.
