FAQs

Q1. Where can I find out the course dates?

A1. See the current DIN for Adventure Training Courses – DINs are available from your Unit Registry and the Defence Intranet. (see also the drop down menu ….. on this website)

Q2. Where is the Application Form?

A2. In JSP 419 – The Armed Forces Adventure Training Manual. – JSP 419 can be found in your Unit Gymnasium or on Defence Intranet. (see also the drop down menu on this website).

Q3. Will JSSADC send me out an Application Form?

A3. No, it is not our policy to post or fax paperwork – and if you have found this website you will find application forms too.

Q4. Do I need a Medical?

A4. Yes, you need a Full Diving Medical. Nobody is allowed in the water without a medical certificate (see drop down menu). JSSADC do not offer medical advice, so if you or your Doctor have any queries you need to contact the Institute of Naval Medicine. Please note that an Aircrew Medical does not count as a Diving Medical – there are some differences. Remember, JSSADC is not qualified to give medical advice.

Q5. What is the beginners’ course called?

A5. The beginner level course is called Ocean Diver. It is the most popular course that JSSADC run and is heavily subscribed to. Applicants need to be aware that not everyone is successful with their bid first time and that is why we encourage people to submit a choice of dates on the application form advising us of their availability. As a Joint Service Centre we do not take block bookings from single units.

Q6. I have been unsuccessful several times for a course. Why is this?

A6. It is nothing personal! JSSADC is an extremely popular Diving Centre and most of our courses are oversubscribed. If you have repeatedly been unsuccessful, please annotate your application form detailing your previous bid dates and we will try to take that into account.

Q7. Do I have to bring my own diving equipment?

A7. JSSADC can provide all the equipment you will need to complete a course. If you wish to bring anything of your own, you will need to sign a waiver certificate to confirm your own responsibility.

Q8. I want to borrow some diving kit. Will JSSADC loan me any?

A8. No, is our normal policy as students on courses at JSSADC take priority with all diving kit. However, any anticipated loans would need a specific request and fully justified reasons must be made well in advance.

Q9. How do I get to Fort Bovisand?

A9. Maps can be found on this website. You may wish to use: www.theaa.com to arrange your personal directions. Please note there is no public transport to Fort Bovisand and it is in a remote location. Students on course are met each morning in HMS DRAKE by the JSSADC mini-bus and transported to and from the centre. Your Joining Instructions will contain exact maps and details. All Hire Cars must be booked by students in advance. Please note that if you are accommodated in HMS DRAKE your Hire Car may need to be collected/delivered there as opposed to Fort Bovisand. Consider this when booking your car. Anyone travelling by train will need to alight at Plymouth Station.

Q10. Where am I accommodated?

A10. Students are normally accommodated in HMS DRAKE in the respective Messes. However, if there is a shortage of accommodation we will obtain a Non-Availability Chit so you can arrange your own hotel booking through the Central Hotel Booking Service.

Q11. Is there a restaurant on site?

A11. No. If you are accommodated in HMS DRAKE you will receive a packed lunch until the ‘Pay As You Dine’ arrangements come into force. If you arrange your own accommodation you will need to make your own lunch arrangements. It is recommended you keep receipts for any purchases in order to claim expenses. Remember Fort Bovisand is in a remote location and there are no catering facilities nearby. Bringing a thermos flask for hot drinks is advised.

Q12. I want to organise an Exped. How do I go about it?

A12. If the Exped is to be held at Fort Bovisand then you will need to contact the Exped Organiser via this website. If you wish to plan an Exped elsewhere, then please go to the relevant Service Association for information through their Exped Organiser. You may find the links on the website useful.

Q13. I need a SADS. How do I find one?

A13. Put details of your Exped on the JSSADC website (see drop down Menu) and you can advertise for a SADS.

Q14. I am a PADI Diver. Can I convert my qualifications to BSAC?

A14. Yes, by joining your local BSAC club. They will arrange for you to take the necessary modules. JSSADC do not have the facilities to do this.
