2009 INTER-SERVICES RESULTS

23-27 FEBRUARY – KÖNIGSSEE, BAVARIA
The 2009 Inter-Services Luge Championships were held for the first time in Königssee, near Berchtesgaden in Bavaria. This track is fast, and designed for luge, with some very high-G bends, so it presented a real challenge for the Service-teams, which were fresh from the single-Service races the previous week in Igls, Austria. All three Services rose tremendously to the challenge, and we had the most exciting and unpredictable championships for many years. Once again, the pressure was on the RAF to defend its 2007/08 title, and this time the Royal Navy team were also pressing them hard in practice. The track proved too hard for a couple of competitors, although fortunately injuries were limited to some stitches in a chin and a very sore ankle! The Inter-Services race was a nail-biter. After the first of two runs, the Army team was almost out of contention after a crash by its top racer. In the end, the RAF team’s consistency won them the Championship, with the Navy coming very creditable runners-up. In spite of a fight-back, the Army came last.
